Anciennement appelé Morbid God, le groupe Moonspell, originaire du Portugal, est créé durant l'année 1989. Avec le départ de Sergio Crestana (basse), le groupe se compose actuellement du chanteur Fernando Ribeiro, des guitaristes Ricardo Amorim et Pedro Paixão ( auparavant au clavier ) ainsi que du batteur Mike Gaspar. Moonspell sort son premier album Wolfheart en 1995. Il est suivi de Irreligious en 1996 puis Sin-Pecado en 1998. L'année suivante le groupe enregistre Butterfly effect. En 2003, The Antidote voit le jour et permet un retour en force au quatuor.
2006 sonne le retour aux sources de Moonspell avec le très bon album Memorial.
La même année, la formation remporte l’European MTV award du meilleur groupe portugais. Une première pour un groupe Metal depuis les 13 années de création du concours !
